Taking action seems to be the issue in the
childhood obesity epidemic. It is not that America does not know what to do; it
is how to do it. If advertising spent more time explaining how to be proactive
and less time harping on what to eat and what not to eat, there would have
already been a change. If cities made more of an effort to make it easy to
register children in team sports, then it would have already been done. While
it does ultimately come down to the parents, the schools and cities should do a
better job promoting it. Ron Schuler in "Government involvement in sport
for youth" states that, “the promotion and development of exercise and
sport at a young age allows an active approach to maintain a healthy lifestyle,
for not only children, but for the parents who are responsible for setting an
example.” There are very few Americans that can say that sports do not affect
their daily lives. So why not take what we all know and love as Americans and
instill that in our children.
